Some General Knowledge of LED Light and Chip Structure

Moonleds, with more than 10 years of innovations and field tests, is a professional LED Chip solutions company that helps customers to get the highest levels of performance in LED Lighting. In today's blog we will show you some comparison between SMD LED and COB LED, and the factors related to their contruction.

SMD

SMD LEDs can have up to 3 to 4 diodes on a single chip, each with a separate circuit. Each circuit has a cathode and an anode, resulting in 2, 4, 6 or 8 contacts in the chip.

The chip can contain a red, green, blue and white diode, and you can create any color by simply adjusting the output frequency.

SMDs come in a variety of sizes and can host complex designs of chips.

SMD chips are known for their brightness, producing 50-200 lm/w.

COB

COB chips typically have 9 or more diodes. It also has 1 circuit and 2 contacts, but it is independent of the number of diodes.

COB LED lamps cannot be used to produce color changing bulbs or luminaires and need to be regulated through multiple channels to produce color changing effects.

Since all the LEDs of the luminaire are concentrated in one area, greater cooling capacity is required.

COB LEDs move away from traditional discrete packages by densely packing as many integrated chips as possible on arbitrarily shaped areas made of insulation and aluminum substrates, and they have a unique appearance.

SMD compared to COB

SMDs can be used to generate color-changing bulbs or lamps to accommodate complex designs of chips.

SMD chips have better heat dissipation and are not as dense as COB chips. The dispersed but regular arrangement helps disperse heat from the chip to the substrate.

SMD LEDs also produce a wider beam, which means the lamp does not require as large a heat sink as COB LEDs.

The cost of SMD LEDs may be lower.

Factors Affecting the Quality of LEDs

1. Bracket

There are basically two types of LED brackets on the market: PCT and EMC. Generally speaking, the working temperature of lamps used for outdoor lighting is relatively high, so the bracket needs to use EMC. If the temperature-intolerant PCT is used in an environment with a high operating temperature, the chip will fail to light up due to the failure of fixing.

2. Glue

The role of glue cannot be underestimated. Glue acts as a fixation and protection. Without glue or poor quality glue, the parts cannot be connected properly.

3. Chip lead

In the early days, gold wire was used for chip leads due to its high melting point and good ductility. However, the cost of pure gold is simply too high. While ensuring the conductive effect of the leads and reducing costs, many suppliers choose to use alloy wires. However, we do not recommend LED chips with copper wires because copper wires are less conductive and have a lower melting point than gold.

4. Utilization of LED chips

If we apply the LED to 100% (limit), its lifespan will undoubtedly be greatly shortened. Therefore, when designing lamps, try to adhere to the principle of using only 60% -80% of LED chips, which is conducive to ensuring the quality and life of the entire lamp.

After you have mastered the knowledge of LED chips, you have a more in-depth understanding of what LED are and how to choose and judge LED chips. Only by choosing the right led chip, the lamps can get better quality and longer life.
