Rubber & Plastics

The main difference between CPVC and PVC is the temperature range they can withstand; CPVC can withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, while PVC has a limit of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Above these temperatures, both CPVC and PVC will begin to soften, increasing the risk of joint and pipe damage, which can cause the piping system to fail.

Please note that because of the different chemical composition, primers, adhesives and binders are different. Check the product container to ensure proper application with the correct reagent.

What is PVC hose?

Polyvinyl chloride is a man-made plastic synthesized from vinyl chloride. CH2=CHCl is its chemical formula.  All these atoms are connected by a single bond. This individual molecular unit other units are then joined together to form chains, which are then extruded as PVC to form PVC products, such as pipes and hoses.

Physical properties of PVC hose

Generally, PVC pipes are white or gray in color and have a technical description of the pipe printed on the side. pvc comes in a rigid form (uPVC, commonly used in construction) and a flexible form (used for cable insulation). Both forms of PVC are safe to touch and handle and do not leak during normal use.

PVC hoses applications

Both PVC and CPVC are suitable for water, gas and drainage systems, but many plumbers strongly recommend CPVC for hot water lines and PVC for cold water lines. As mentioned earlier this is because the maximum temperatures they can withstand are different.

PVC pipe can be used for hot water tubs, and washing machines. There are reinforced PVC hoses and PVC garden hoses for daily use.

What is CPVC hose?

CPVC is a thermoplastic made of polyvinyl chloride that is further chlorinated. The chemical formula is CHCl=CHCl, and the molecule is linked to other molecules to form the polymer chains of CPVC, which has good resistance to degradation and a long service life.

CPVC pipe is sized in two ways - nominal pipe size (NPS) and copper pipe size (CTS).  Typically, the pipe is light gray with the NPS system and yellow with the CTS system. Both types of pipe will have their specifications printed on the side.

CPVC hoses uses

The additional chlorine in CPVC adds chemical strength and helps prevent the formation of bacteria/biofilm in the pipe.

CPVC piping can be used for water heaters, dishwashers.

ANSI/NSF 61 certified hoses are safe for potable water use.

Special Attention

When PVC or CPVC is heated, melted, or thermally cut, it can give off toxic fumes.

When working with PVC or CPVC, work in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate safety clothing, including gloves, goggles and respirator.

Their Advantages

CPVC and PVC are quieter, easier to install, and less expensive than copper and iron pipe. Because they are thermoplastics, they are insulated and can maintain hot and cold water temperatures better than copper pipes. They contain elemental chlorine, are structurally stable and are inherently flame retardant.  This gives PVC and CPVC a long service life. Other kinds of hoses like PVC gas ose, PVC fiber hose are also widely used.

So which one do you choose?

PVC pipe: Affordable and below 140 degrees Fahrenheit, it is best suited for recreational applications, residential construction, DIY projects and cold water distribution.

CPVC Pipe: Excellent resistance and performance at temperatures below 200 degrees Fahrenheit, best suited for commercial applications, chemical handling and hot water distribution.
