The taper drill rod, also known as pneumatic drill rod or finished drill rod, is a main rock drilling tool used in the fields of mining, tunnel and quarrying. Generally working with hand-held, air-leg type pneumatic rock drills and hydraulic drills. The taper rod consists of a cone, a rod body, a collar and an impact end.

Raw Material

The material of tapered drill pipe plays a key role in its manufacture. As the drill pipe needs to withstand extremely high pressures and torques during drilling while also resisting friction and wear. Therefore, the selection of high-quality materials is an important factor in ensuring the performance and life of taper drill steel.

The commonly used material for the drill rods is high-strength alloy steel. This type of steel contains appropriate amounts of carbon and alloying elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, etc. It has high strength, high toughness and wear resistance. Therefore, these properties enable drill pipe to withstand the high pressures, high torques and mechanical stresses experienced during drilling.

Production Process

The production process of the tapered connecting drill rod is as follows:

  1. Inspection – straightening – hole expansion, sizing and shaping – head chamfering – extrusion of the collar – processing of taper end. After that,the semi-finished products is ready.
  2. Inspection of semi-finished product,inspection and straightening of them one by one.
  3. Heat treatment,including quenching and tempering of the shank,tempering of taper end.
  4. After that,surface treatment like surface shot blasting and strengthening, as well as surface anti-corrosion treatment.
  5. Finally,quality inspection, packaging and warehousing.

Tapered drill steel are available in different specifications and designs, suitable for various drilling and crushing needs. Common tapers are 7 degrees, 11 degrees and 12 degrees. Each taper corresponds to different application scenarios and supporting equipment. And the length vary from 400-mm.
