There are almost endless backyard badminton sets available, each with its unique features, sizes, and materials. The good news is most of these sets follow a similar setup process. With just a few basic steps, you'll have your net up and ready to use in 30 minutes or less.
Continue reading for a step-by-step guide on how to set up a badminton net, covering court sizing, assembling the base, and more.
Here's how to set up a badminton net, broken down into three easy steps:
While badminton net setups can vary in dimensions, the official size of a badminton court is 20 ft (6.1 m) by 44 ft (13.4 m). Try to find an open area around this size if possible.
Once you’ve found the right spot, mark your court boundaries using chalk, tape, or any material suitable for the playing surface. If you're just playing casually, this step is optional.
Many portable badminton nets come with a freestanding base that attaches from the center below the net. These bases are typically smaller than standard-sized nets but offer easier assembly. To set up this type of net, you’d simply:
Snap a pole into each side of the base.
Extend each pole fully outward.
Other backyard badminton sets come with multiple poles that snap together, and they may or may not need stakes in the ground. For these sets, snap each section of the posts together so they stand upright at full height.
Note: If your net setup involves inserting posts into the ground, attach the mesh after securing the first post. Use the loose end of the net to determine where to place the other post.
Once your posts are assembled, the next step is to attach the net. Some nets slip over the poles using pockets, while others use loops or eye bolts to attach the mesh to the top and bottom.
Refer to your set’s instructions for specific details, as this step can vary depending on the type of net. This video tutorial from Badminton Warehouse can also help you understand the setup process:
And there you have it! Now you know how to set up a backyard badminton set in just a few easy steps. While not every badminton net will have the exact same steps, the general process is similar across different types. As a recap:
Start by choosing and marking out your court area.
Assemble your freestanding net base (or insert your posts into the ground if applicable).
Extend the posts outward and attach any additional pieces.
Attach the mesh to the posts.
Then, grab a couple of rackets, a partner, and a birdie, and you're ready for a match!

Add a new level of convenience to your badminton unit with this portable net system! The net conveniently expands from and retracts into two spring-loaded housing units. Each stand features fold-down legs, one weighted, to add extra stability and to help keep the net tight. The net expands to regulation size for official badminton play!
Outstanding Convenience
Never worry about taking time out of your day to set up badminton games again! Without multiple pipes and parts to set up or take down, these nets are ready for play in no time at all.
Additionally, this badminton net system only takes up 37"L x 7-3/4"W x 15"H worth of space, allowing it to fit into even the smallest closets.
Intuitive Functionality
This all-in-one net system is completely housed within two canisters, eliminating the need to remove it from the frame and roll it up for storage. The net is automatically dispensed when the two canisters are pulled apart. When the action concludes, simply press a button and watch it retract by itself!
Official Play
When fully expanded, the net measures an official 20"W x 60"H. A black sewn line indicates where the center of the court should be, making setup even easier. The system's legs are weighted as well, allowing for more stability and a tighter net for a higher level of authenticity.
